1. Take a break from the book
Take a true break from writing. If you’ve tried to write for 2 days but nothing came out, this doesn’t count as a break. Close your laptop or notebook and try not to think about it (I know it’s hard). Sometimes a break brings the mental clarity needed to help jumpstart your author fingers.
2. Take a long walk
If you already take daily walks, take a different path and walk longer. If it’s -20 and snowing for the next few weeks, take laps around your house. Live in a tiny studio apartment? Dance to a few songs. Listen to pump up music and drown out the noise of writing.
3. Do something fun and different
If you hang out at bookshops and cafes, try going to a concert or sporting event. If you frequent concerts or sporting events, go to a popup market. Just make sure whatever you do is something that you actually enjoy.
4. Get affirmations from your friends
Your friends will be supportive of you and even a little bit of support can help build the confidence you need to get past the block. If there’s a person that you’ve been consulting with about the book, reach out to them, they can help level set you, and give you encouragement. If you don’t have anyone, know that I believe in you.
5. Reread a past work, or write something new
Reread something you’ve written before that you’re proud of, even if it’s not in the genre you’re currently writing. This can remind you that you are competent,,,,or show you how much you have improved. If you’re feeling up to it, rewrite a scene to get the creative juices flowing again. If you don’t have a previous work, try outlining or writing a scene from another idea you have.
1/2. If all else fails, prove them all wrong
It will feel sweet sweet sweet when you type that last period. Were you only able to write 1 sentence? Small steps are still steps. Any progress is good progress. YOU. CAN. DO. IT.
Happy writing!
